Linear Parametrization of the Equation of State Near the Critical Point

A linear parametrization of the equation of state near the critical point, proposed by Schofield, is tested. From the available experimental data in the critical regions of a number of magnets (Cr${\mathrm{Br}}_{3}$, Ni, Gd) and fluids (${\mathrm{Co}}_{2}$, Xe, ${\mathrm{He}}^{4}$) we find evidence of systematic deviations from an assumption of linearity.
